The students really enjoyed the Expo class this week. A new topic was introduced about how plastics are taking over the world, and the is impact on humans and animals. Perhaps an inquiry topic for the Expo...

What do you SEE? What do you THINK? What do you WONDER? Students are working on proper note-taking techniques, and how to record ideas and thoughts in a meaningful and time-saving manner. While watching the Documentary The 11th Hour for this year's Expo, students recorded their observations, feelings/thoughts, and questions in an easy-to-read graphic organizer. I was very impressed to see that students had some great recorded information, as well as some thoughtful connections, and even some sketched sustainable housing prototypes!
For their unit about Forces and Structures, grade 5/6 students read an article about the history of domes and how they are constructed, during English class. They then used the knowledge they gained from the article to construct a dome of their own!
The students are having a hard time putting down this book! A very interesting novel about a dystopian community living in the future, and survival is in the hands of two 11 year olds. We have had many great discussions about the systems put in place to keep the Ember community in working order, and have had some great ideas of what could be done to improve it.
The students had fun using our unit vocabulary words to create their own crossword puzzles. Next step, can they solve them?
The class is busy organizing a group Action which will include the whole school, families, as well as local community members. In small groups, the students wrote to local newspapers, radio stations, and parents to inform them of the Walk-a-thon that will help bring awareness to children's rights. Walk for Water will take place May 9th from 1:30 to 3 pm at Morrison Park.
In English class the students are learning about writing narrative stories from the perspective of others. These stories will be used as part of their Expo presentation. In order to understand how to create a compelling perspective story, the class enjoyed watching the new movie, The Breadwinner. This was a novel most students had read in the past, and it sparked an interesting conversation about how a story can easily be changed into a script and express the same story in a creative manner.
We were so happy to welcome Andrea, (Kenzie's mom) into our class to speak to us about the many jobs at Parliament. The students were very engaged as she shared with us how a bill is passed, and all the background work that is put into it. Very impressive questions were brought forward by many students who all now have a better understanding of the importance of our government. Next week we will get to see all of it in action, as the students will be attending the workshop "Passing a Bill," and tour the parliament buildings.
