Students are strengthening their note-taking skills and seeing the importance of taking clear and concise notes from primary and secondary sources. For this task, students have written the highlighted words from their research. Using just the post-it notes, students will synthesize the information they read, and complete a short research paragraph.

Just because some of our peers are learning remotely, does not mean they do not participate in our read-alouds. Our computer travels around the class listening to individual students read.
Students are exploring how to use dialogue to tell a story. Students will be creating their own comic book about a dystopian society.
To practice using dialogue correctly, students participated in a Reader's Theater. Using the lines from the script, students designed a short comic. Students had fun illustrating the characters from the fractured nursery rhyme "This Little Piggy!"
Today we looked through a variety of local newspapers to find the elements in a newspaper which draws the most attention. The use of colour, size of photos and words, and word choice seemed to be the most popular observations. The students also explored which advertisements were most effective and why.
Our kick-off for the unit about Media and Advertising was a real hit! Students enjoyed looking at newspaper pictures, discussing what they saw vs what they inferred, and finally creating eye-catching titles and humorous captions. It was interesting to compare the different perceptions of the pictures, and how an image can elicit different ideas and thoughts for each person.
Students completed a See, Think, Wonder chart when looking at a variety of religious symbols, buildings, and artwork. It sparked a great discussion about what our next unit would be, and added some excitement for what's to come!
