We have started our first round of Literature Circles, and we are very excited to choose our novels. In groups of 3 or 4, students chose a Roald Dahl novel to study. Each member of the group has a role for the week which includes Discussion Director, Word Finder, Summarizer, and Illustrator. Every week the students will take on a new role and take turns leading the group. Literature groups are a great way for students to gain independence, take responsibility, and practice the reading strategies learned during class mini lesson while having the freedom to choose their own book.

How do writers get inspiration? Today our class full of authors, gathered seed ideas from magazine pictures. The smallest of pictures can triggered the most wonderful of memories, and the simplest of photos can explode into a wonderfully creative story. It was wonderful to see the smiles on people's faces when they shared their Seed Ideas with each other. The pages of our writer's notebooks are now filled with colourful pictures and plenty of inspiration for future stories!
The students are really enjoying learning about Roald Dahl's background, and the inspiration behind his stories. Some of the most intriguing items we have read about are regarding his years living at the boarding school, sounds like a very scary place! I am happy to announce that even the parents are getting involved and sharing interesting articles about the author. Thank you Kirstine Postma (Anisha's mom)for the very interesting article you shared with us. https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/books/2017/sep/13/charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-hero-originally-black-roald-dahl
We are all feeling very inspired to read more Roald Dahl novels, and even write our own funny stories! After reading an autobiography and listening to an audio recording of an interview done by Roald Dahl, the class compiled a list of writing tips from the author. It was very interesting to learn to what a famous author has to say about the art of writing, and the students were very excited to start their own personal writer's notebooks. Some of the most interesting facts we learned that we will be sure to keep in mind include:
Wow, grade 6 already! This is a very important year for the grade 6 class as they will be participating the PYP Expo later in the school year. We could not think of a better way to review the IB terminology than to create our English classroom Essential Agreements using the Learner Profile. The students worked in partners to describe how the class would exhibit each of the Learner profiles during the school year. After sharing their descriptions with the class and ensuring that everyone agreed, the students created a very beautiful display to reflect on throughout the year. These pictures and descriptors also act as a good reference point for the younger students who visit the classroom.
