We are starting off our unit on poetry by exploring how poetry can elicit emotions and leads the audience to visualize different scenes. The first poem we looked at was "Colors" by Shel Silvertein.

As we get ready for the iSTEAM fair, students are exploring observational writing. Using our senses is a great way to improve our writing and add detail to our work. Today we used our sense of touch to create a list of adjectives that we can use to describe mystery objects. Can you guess what the objects are?
By watching videos and reading short texts, students in Grade 1/2 are learning about note-taking. Together we are discussing what is important information and what is not. We discussed important questions and how to find the answers to these important questions through research. We will continue to explore researching and note-taking when working on our transportation timelines.
In all my classes, I emphasize the importance of public speaking and clear communication. Building this confidence at a young age, allows our students to become strong and effective communicators throughout their education career, but also outside of their school life.
After a long discussion, and much input from all members of the class, we decided that they way in which we present information is VERY important! Reflecting back on our unit, we looked at the importance supporting each member of the work force as well as the importance of clear communication. The students looked at the best way to communicate their information with the class, that would look both interesting, as well as tidy and clear enough to read. Everyone is putting their own flair on their final presentation.
Learning to take notes is a very important skill. Many older children have difficulty taking notes and putting information they read into their own words. I often ask students to explain to me what their notes mean, and many times they are unable to do so. When this happens, I explain to the child that they should only be writing something once they have actually "learned" it, not just copy the information. I great way to teach and strengthen note taking skills, is to take notes from a video. Students can take notes about what they see happening in the film, what they infer is happening and why, and information that is spoken during the film. I encourage the students to use a mix of sketches, labels, and jot notes. Following the video, I ask the students to share what they learned using their notes as reminders. Once the students feel comfortable with note taking, we will start exercises using text for research.
The Approaches to learning (ATL) are grounded in the belief that learning how to learn is fundamental to a student’s education. There are five categories of interrelated skills and associated sub-skills support students of all ages to become self-regulated learners.
The Grade 2/3 students worked on developing their communication skills by interviewing a member of their family, recording the information, and sharing it orally with their peers. They will now be using the information gathered from their interview to draft a short biography. Students have been exploring biographies of famous Canadians and Americans. They have been looking at how biographies are formatted and why they are important for learning about the past.
We are now looking at writing biographies about family members. First we looked at the important information we need to construct a biography, then how to structure our information. I gave the students a challenge to complete a timeline of my own life using important events. Students had fun using their reasoning skills to correctly complete the timeline. Welcome Back! It was so wonderful to have all the students back in the classroom, and we wasted no time at all in catching up. It was like we were never apart! For our first day activity, we reviewed the 10 different learner profiles and gave examples of how we show those learner profiles in our personal lives. Next up, time to create a superhero who exhibits one ( or more) of those learner profiles. I can not wait to decorate my class with these " Super" posters.
